Scouts support from
Maleny I.G.A. StoreMaleny scouts received a boost to funds recently with a cheque for $1172. The funds came through Maleny super IGA’s Community Benefit Club and was presented at a recent Scout event.
Group leader David King was thrilled. “It has come at a time when funds were low, so is greatly appreciated. It’s refreshing to see local business such as IGA funding important groups within the community.
It is likely the cheque will be used for sporting and/or camping equipment. Maleny super IGA owner Rob Outridge said it was a great effort for a small group. Maleny Scouts currently number around 35. Mr King said the group welcomed both boys and girls from six years old to enjoy the camaraderie and fun in the joey, cub and scout sections.
“Scouting is about maximising the capabilities of young members in a broad sphere of activities,” he said. “Scouts allow members to gain awards in many disciplines, to develop and to gain recognition for activities outside Scouting.”
Maleny Scouts folded a few years ago, predominantly because of a lack of leaders. Karen Binstead, who has been involved in scouting at all levels for many years was one of the presenters at a meeting in October 2005, to gauge levels of enthusiasm for restarting a troop in Maleny.
David King recalls the meeting. “David Dauth and I nodded during the meeting, and other leaders joined shortly thereafter,” he said.
Scouts is housed in the guide hut, previously the Neighbourhood Centre in Cedar Street. Joeys and cubs meet on Thursday and scouts currently meet on Friday. For further information phone Karen on 5494 3677.
