During the early period of Neighbourhood Watch in Maleny an important part of the group's communication was the Neighbourhood Watch newsletter. Maleny N.H.W. newsletter was recognised as a leader for local group's newsletters. It was even used as a style for the state newsletter.
The newsletter was created as a result of sponsorship by various local businesses, Maleny Print & Copy Service and the then Officer in Charge of Maleny Police, Sergeant Les Fawkes.
Local artist and commercial cartoonist, Donald Greenfield of Witta created a cartoon character through which it was hoped to present various messages relevant to the ideals of the Maleny NHW group. The mascot, a koala named, "Mal Watcher". The name came from "Mal" of Maleny and "Watcher" from Neighbourhood WATCH and the ideal of "watcher" as a person who is on the lookout for criminal activities within their area.
"Our Mascot, Mal Watcher. He will bring some important NHW messages
to you over the next few weeks."The first message that Mal brings to us relates to property theft. Mal tells us that property that has been marked in a known manner is easier to be returned to the rightful owner. Police recover a large amount of property and are unable to return it to anybody because the rightful owner cannot be established. This property sits in police custody for long periods of time depreciating in value.
The police service has a marking system that is relevant throughout Australia. You can get information from your local police station as to how and where to mark your property for easy identification.
Many of the unlawful entries to our homes and cars are through unlocked windows and doors. By installing quality locks and screens and then using them will prevent most people from entering your property.
You can lessen the pressure on yourself should you unfortunately be broken into or even have your home burnt down by ensuring that you have adequate insurance.
Over the next few weeks we will add some of those cartoon messages for you
- thanks to Don.
