John Marsden will sing the Usher, and Reg Darwell the Foreman, in the Maleny Singer’s upcoming production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Trial by Jury“ in June.

TRIAL BY JURY tells the story of a ‘breach of promise’ trial going awry. HMS PINAFORE recounts the story of the captain’s daughter Josephine, who loves a lowerclass sailor, thus overturning the social order of the time

John, a bass, has sung many G & S lead roles with the Singers since 2005. His characters have included the Judge in ‘Trial by Jury‘, Sir Joseph in ‘HMS Pinafore‘, the Duke in ‘Gondoliers‘, Pooh-Bah in ‘Mikado‘, Major Murgatroyd in ‘Patience‘‘, and Sir Richard in ‘Yeomen of the Guard‘.

To this he has added the butler in Strauss‘ ‘Die Fledermaus‘, Baron Zeta in Lehar’s ‘the Merry Widow‘, and Pluto in Offenbach’s ‘Orpheus in the Underworld‘.

As with many lead voices among the Maleny Singers, John is happy to sing in the chorus, and has added welcome support to his section with his strong, deep, basso.

Reg Darwell, a tenor, is a retired Qantas International B747 captain. He and his wife Pat moved to Maleny from Sydney in 1994.

Reg is no stranger to musical theatre having grown up in the chaos of the theatre and theatrical people.

Both his parents were in professional theatre – his mother a leading soprano and his father a tenor in the chorus as well as a cornet player in brass bands. Reg’s playgrounds were the rehearsal venues and back stages of theatres.

In his younger days Reg appeared in many plays, choirs and G&S productions at North Sydney Technical High School. Now in retirement and free from the constraints of career and raising a family, Reg can now indulge himself by getting back to music and theatre with The Maleny Singers, Maleny Players and playing trumpet with The Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra and The Davonski Concert Orchestra.

This dynamic duo will also sing as members of the crew of the man-of-war HMS Pinafore in the accompanying production of that operetta.

You can hear both productions at Maleny Community Centre, commencing on Friday 24 June with an evening performance at 6.30pm.

Matinees will be held on Saturday, 25 June at 2.00pm and Sunday at 400pm.

Tickets: Adult $30 | Concessions $27.50 | Primary school children $15 and can be booked by phoning the Maleny Visitor Centre on 5499 9033.
