Hinterland gets good representation
on Caloundra Tourism

by Cameron Outridge

A new look board has been elected to forge ahead with promoting Caloundra as the holiday destination of choice at the first general meeting of Caloundra Tourism. Tony Gill of Art on Cairncross was one of the newly elected members, and was very pleased with the level of representation on the board from the Range and Hinterland. “Over $800,000 has been raised by the Tourism Levy, and the board is now charged with using the money to raise the profile of Caloundra City and it’s surrounds,” Tony said.  Caloundra City encompasses both coastal and hinterland areas.  “At the moment, I am looking for input from the public and business community, but the only way people can have their say is to become members of Caloundra Tourism Incorporated,” Tony said.  “It costs nothing to join, and I encourage all ratepayers, residents and businesses to join,” he said.   The next meeting of the Caloundra Tourism Incorporated board will be on the 26th of March.    For more information about how you can join, and have a say in how this region will be promoted, please contact Tony Gill at Art on Cairncross on 5429 6404.   Caloundra City Mayor, Councillor Don Aldous said a strong field of nominees contested the 11 seats on the new board, with nearly 80 people attending the first general meeting held at the Caloundra Cultural Centre last night.  “Four new faces, Garth Simmons (Rydges Oasis Resort), Peter Ryan, Tony Gill (Art on Cairncross) and myself were appointed alongside existing members of the Interim Tourism Board, who were re-elected,” he said.   “The new board now comprises of Mayor Don Aldous, Deputy Mayor, Don Smith, David Thompson (Aussie World), Garth Simmons (Rydges Oasis Resort), Mike Wilkinson, David Gration (Caloundra Cultural Centre), Barry Collins (Joanne Apartments), Peter Ryan, Melos Sulicich (MSMarketing), Wally Hopper (Suncoast IT) and Tony Gill (Art on Cairncross).”    Cr Aldous said Mike Wilkinson was formally elected as the President, with David Thompson as the Vice President, Barry Collins as the Secretary and Garth Simmons as the Treasurer.

• In other tourism news, the new-look Mountain Light Multi-Function Centre on Cairncross Corner hosted the launch of South East Queensland Country Touring Guide on Wednesday. Officials and tourism operators gathered to celebrate the release.   The latest guide will be promoted with a $130,000 advertising campaign throughout Queensland and northern NSW.
