Ben Phipps
Caloundra Young Citizen of the Year
by Cameron Outridge

Ben Phipps of Maleny took out the Young Citizen of the Year Award at then Caloundra City Council’s Australia Day Awards for 2003.    Accompanied by his proud family, and members of TS Centaur Naval Cadets, Ben was obviously proud to receive the honour.

Another well-known Maleny family, the Skerman’s were at the award ceremony to support their son Matthew who was nominated in the Young Sports Person Award category.  He was just pipped at the post by Amy Blokkeerus, but there is little doubt his name will appear again in the future.  Ben Phipps is a long time volunteer of the Maleny Rural Fire Service having joined up before he was old enough to drive a truck.  Today he is an active rural fire fighter and instructor assists in the training of others.

Ben joined the Naval Cadets at 16 and is now a Petty Officer and volunteer.   He was awarded Cadet of the Year by TS Centaur two years ago.    As Mayor Cr Don Aldous presented Ben his Young Citizen of the Year Award he said that Ben’s leadership qualities, self-discipline, enthusiasm, hard work and respect of others have made him truly deserving of the award.

Our thanks once again to Cameron & Tanya Outridge
