Croquet Club Celebrates’

by Cameron Outridge

On a cool, i n c l e m e n t day in July 1993 The Range Croquet Club was officially opened by Edna McKenna who was President of the Croquet Association of Queensland at the time.

Last Saturday, July 19 we celebrated ten years of croquet on the range with a large gathering of friends from the croquet fraternity being officially welcomed by our president Vince Carbery.   As well as the other six clubs from the coast being well represented we had visitors from the Toombul, Windsor, Graceville and Eildon clubs in Brisbane plus eight members from the Point Lookout club, Maryborough. Also joining us were players from New Zealand, Benalla (Victoria) and Hobart.   Cr Pauline Clayton, Ivan Hankison and our inaugural president Ted Singleton addressed the gathering.

Unfortunately, Alice Crombie, a driving force behind the establishment of our club, was unable to be present due to ill health but her husband Jim accepted a life membership badge, on her behalf, replying graciously.

The celebration birthday cake was cut by Pauline Clayton.

A special thanks to Maleny IGA, Top of the Range Meats, Maleny Bakery and Maleny Harvest for sponsoring our day and to the Apex Club for their assistance.

The beautiful quilt made and donated by Margaret Smith was won by Trudi Miller of Coolum while our own Roz Pagliarino collected the bottles of wine donated by Ken and Lesley Cole.

A pictorial history of the first ten years was compiled by Val Carbery who also had a doll display depicting the opening of 1993.   These dolls were readily snapped as mementos. Vince Carbery and Pauline Clayton cut the celebration cake.
