Businesses rally to help
jewellers after break-in
by Tanya  Outridge

Thieves may have smashed their way into Maleny Jewellers but they haven’t broken the spirit of its owners.   In fact Sandra and Jim Goulton have been heartened by the response from friends and fellow businesspeople.

Thieves made off with $5,500 worth of jewellery and watches after the smash and grab at 2.20am on Saturday August 16 at the Riverside Centre shop.  They gained entry by breaking a glass panel at the front.    They also caused extensive damage once inside, smashing six glass topped display cabinets.

“It was terrible to walk into our business and see the damage,” said Jim.  “The Police are chasing some leads at the moment, and they also have blood samples from the shop, so eventually, they will catch up with the people involved.”

Jim and Sandra are expecting their second child in 15 weeks and this incident could have understandably dragged them into despair.

Instead the Goultons are putting a positive spin on the incident.  “More good than bad has come from the break in,” said Jim.   “The support we have received from the Maleny business community, our customers, friends and family has been overwhelming.”

“Mark and Trish from Maple 3 came to the rescue on Saturday morning, and sent breakfast down to us while we were cleaning up.   People streamed into the shop during the day, bringing food, flowers and offers of help.

Then in the evening, Phil and Sonya from Cappriccios sent us some pizzas for dinner,” he said.   Robbie from Maleny Glass got us up and running again really quickley by replacing our broken glass straight away.

“We also want to thank Dean “the mean cleaning machine” Gamble for everything she has done to help us out, she has been amazing,” Jim said.

Amongst the items stolen were men’s and ladies Jag, Casio and G-Shock watches, and fine silver chains and bracelets.   If anyone has any information about the break in, they are asked to contact the Maleny Police on 5494 2204.

Jim and Sandra Goulton with Lauren Mueller ... “More good than bad has come from this”.
