Answering the call of the wild
at Mary Cairncross Reserve

If you have been feeling that call of the wild and yearning for a green, spiritual experience, plus a bit of fun while meeting new people, become a volunteer at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

On July 12 Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve will hold a Training day for new and current volunteers. Mary Cairncross Reserve is looking for anyone with an interest in the environment, conservation, helping visitors, and protecting a valuable remnant of Australia’s sub tropical rainforest. Volunteer staff work on the front desk welcoming visitors, answering inquiries or just having a friendly chat to local and international visitors.

Volunteers can join the Bushcare group which carries out tree plantings, revegetation and regeneration projects in the Reserve, and can become a rainforest interpretive guide for the many school and other groups which come to experience the magic rainforest experience.

The Coordinator, Mark Bonner, said, “We are presently developing a volunteers induction manual and information booklet which will identify a variety of assisting coordinator roles for volunteers to fill, including functions and events, interpretive guides and displays, and the nature study group coordinator.” “We hold regular social get togethers and working bees around the Education Centre. We also have regular nature related talks and courses to enhance volunteer knowledge and interests.   Volunteers are encouraged to devote only as much time as suits their lifestyle.”

The training day starts at 8:30am at Mary Cairncross Reserve with procedures for operation of the Education Centre. This will be followed at 10:30am by a talk on local history by environmentalist and local identity, Stan Tutt. The day will conclude with a BBQ at midday.  All interested and aspiring volunteers are invited to attend. Please book on 5499 9907.
