Wedding bells set to
ring for Labor Candidate

by Cameron Outridge

According to Federal Labor Candidate for Longman, Stephen Beckett the big date has been set!  No, Stephen is not referring to the up coming Federal election date, but the other big day in his life, his wedding.   Stephen is set to marry Ms Shayne Sutton on January 22 in a Catholic ceremony on Bribie Island.

“It is really an exiting time for us as we start to plan out a new life together”, Mr Beckett said.  “It is going to be a big six months as we will have to fit in a Federal election somewhere in between now and the wedding!”.  Mr Beckett first met Ms Sutton about four years ago when she was working for Labor’s high profile Foreign Affairs spokesman, Kevin Rudd MP.  “It’s really good that we are both heavily involved in politics and the Labor Party, so we understand each others workload”, he said.

Mr Beckett admitted to often taking key political advice from his wife to be. “Shayne is a very intelligent women who really understands people”, Mr Beckett said.  When discussing how they actually became a couple, Stephen and Shayne admit that it was some match making by an unlikely Labor figure,Queensland’s Primary Industries Minister, Henry Palaszczuk.

“Shayne was, and still is chairman, of the Primary Industries and Natural resources policy committee and I worked as one of Henry‚s advisers.  Little did I know that he thought that we’d make a good couple. Henry would often send me to meetings with Shayne and to working on policy with the committee”.  Ms Sutton joked, “who would have thought that I’d find my future husband at an ALP Primary Industries meeting”.

The pair revealed that Minister Palaszczuk was one of the first people they phoned to announce their engagement.
