Quilts tell the story
of pioneer women

by Cameron Outridge

The Conondale Quilters will stage their 20th annual show at the Conondale Hall this Saturday and Sunday.  Come and see the quilts which honour 25 pioneer women of the Conondale district.

“They were all women with hearts of gold,’’ said Conondale Quilter Mary Fleiter.  “Their quilts depict the stories of love, endurance and bravery that these women showed and the way they contributed to the community and to their families.”

Another section of the show revolves around the theme of the number twenty.  “As this is our 20th show all members have made a quilt pertaining to the number 20,’’ Mary said.  “In keeping with that theme our industrious quilter Mary Smith has made a remarkable 20 quilts by herself, and these will be presented to the director of nursing of Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital at 3pm on Sunday.

“Mary was hospitalised at the end of last year.   At that time her friends presented her with a beautiful quilt made in a day.  That quilt brought such joy and colour to the ward that she decided to bring even more joy and colour to others.”  The Hall is open 9.30am to 3.30pm both days.  Refreshments are available.  Proceeds of the day will go to the Conondale Rural Fire Brigade.
