Local Disaster Fund comes
to the rescue of house
fire victims.

by Cameron Outridge

TLast week local couple Jeff and Wendy Anderson experienced one of everyone’s worst nightmares. Their home of 25 years was gutted by fire.  They saved only a few possessions and some photographs.  The couple was still grateful that no one was hurt.  They and their son Joel were out at the time.

The Local Disaster Fund was established nearly ten years ago after a bad car smash at Witta.  The fund purchased a ‘jaws of life’ then banked funds for the benefit of local people in distress – situations such as that experienced by the Andersons.

Jeff and Wendy, second from left and centre,
receive a cheque from Fund Committee members, from left, Gary Ricks, Lloyd Larney
and Gordon Jones.

Community and Service Clubs regularly contribute to the fund, which just received cheques from the Apex, Lions and Rotary Clubs.  The Rotary Club of Maleny administers the fund on behalf of the community.  The fund committee, SES Group Leader Lloyd Larney, Police Sergeant Gary Ricks and Rotary President Gordon Jones visited the Andersons to present them with a cheque, and found them with Peter Hopper, local fire service Captain and a yard full of friends, workmates and members of their church congregation; sorting out what could be salvaged from the fire.

Jeff and Wendy were very grateful to the community for the money and the support of so many people, which they said would help to them get started again.

Jeff and Joel Anderson with Peter Hopper
and
friends, workmates and
members of their church congregation
take a break from cleaning up the mess.
