Fifth Light Horse Troop
commemorate Beersheba

by Cameron Outridge

A crystal clear morning last Sunday in Maleny provided a wonderful backdrop for the 87th Anniversary commemorative of the Light Horse Charge at Beersheba.

In memory of this momentous event twelve members of Maleny’s own Fifth Light Horse Troop proudly rode down Maple Street in full traditional ceremonial dress to the Cenotaph at the RSL Memorial Hall.  The ride was led by the Maleny Light Horse President Peter Bray and Troop Commander Joe Colreavy.

A brief, however sombre service, was then carried out in commemoration of the last known great cavalry charge in history which involved two Regiments of the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade who successfully captured the vital water resource wells in the strategically key town of Beersheba, Palestine which was held at that time by Turkish forces.  An advance scout later wrote “it was the bravest, most awe inspiring sight I’ve ever witnessed ... there were more than 500 Aussie horsemen.  As they thundered past, hair stood on end.  The light horse had ridden into history.”

The service was organised by Maleny RSL Ceremonial Officer Gordon Jones AM, while Presedent Frank Beatie OAM delivered the address.  Prayers were led by Paster Peter Horrell of Maleny Baptist Church.  A well drilled catafalque party was provided by members of TS Centaur Navel Reserve Cadets under the Command of Lieut Jean Brooks.

Morning refreshment and camaradarie was then enjoyed by all who attended to mark this momentous occasion on Australia’s calendar.  Maleny Light Horse Troop are currently recruiting riders and non-riders to become new members and bolster their numbers to enable the Unit to become the largest in Australia.
