Maleny dairies win gold
at Sydney Show

by Cameron Outridge

Maleny Dairies has been honoured with a prize haul at the Royal Easter Show for its fledgling yoghurt range.

Maleny Dairies yoghurt has only just hit the shelves and already it has won three medals at the prestigious show – which were judged in advance of the event.   Maleny Dairies won a Gold Medal for Strawberry Yoghurt, Silver for Apricot Yoghurt and Silver for Natural Yoghurt as well as Silver for Guernsey Cream and a Gold medal for Innovative Product category for its Goat’s Milk.

Manager Ross Hopper put the win down to his family’s fresh Maleny milk and Barry, their Yoghurt technologist, doing the homework for them.  “The acidophilus content is quite noticeably higher in our yoghurt,’’ he said.  “And we went through two tonnes of yoghurt trying to source the right cultures and get the recipe just right.’’

In terms of the broader picture Ross said the company, which decided to take on the big dairy companies about 12 months ago, was on track.

“We’re just starting to break even now but we’re heading in the right direction,’’ he said. “Yoghurt is a natural progression along that path.”   The yoghurts are in the shops now, wherever Maleny Dairies milk is sold.

Also available are two types of goat’s yoghurt, natural and strawberry.  “Goat’s yoghurt is very healthy.  Great for people who might be lactose intolerant,’’ said Ross.
