Maleny Cheese wins
gold and silver at Ekka

by Cameron  Outridge

The Bucher and Simpson families of Maleny’s new “Maleny Cheese” are over the moon with the success their cheeses and yoghurts have had at their first showing.  A selection of the fine dairy goods was sent in to the Ekka show this year amidst a very busy schedule for the fledgling business.

The effort was well rewarded, with Maleny Cheese Camembert winning Gold and Maleny Cheese Brie silver.  Creamy Strawberry and the Vanilla yoghurt won bronze awards, while Marinated Feta and several styles of natural yoghurt were also awarded silver and bronze.  “The Cheese Stop customers have been complementing us from the day we opened on the rich flavour our yoghurts have,” Heather Simpson said.

Markus Bucher makes the full range of farmhouse dairy goods at Maleny Cheese, which includes yoghurts, soft ripened cheese, feta and several interesting styles of cheddar.  Markus draws on 25 years experience as a Swiss Master Cheese Maker to make the range including flavours such as Lemon Meringue, Blueberry and Raspberry yoghurts and Herb & Garlic and Sundried Tomato & Olive feta as well as Wasabi, Port and Smoky Cheddar.

The cheesery has been underway with production for the past 3.5 months and draws on a small Maleny herd of Australian Illawarra, Friesian and Guernsey cows.  “These happy Maleny cows make the best milk for cheese and yoghurts,” Markus says and he is looking forward to broadening the tastes and flavours in the range as the cheesery continues to grow.

The Cheese Stop Café is onsite at Maleny Cheese and is open 7 days per week, 9am to 5pm for viewing and tasting of the fine dairy goods.

Maleny IGA and Colin James Fine Foods stock the products as do a growing number of IGA and Action stores across the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane area.

Visitors can watch production and are free to taste and experience the products.
