Maleny Hotel Sold
by Elise Martin

After eight years of ownership, Sir William Allen has sold the historic Maleny Hotel to a syndicate of Coffs Harbour owners.

Hotel Manager John Foley, who had also worked at the hotel for eight years, said syndicate leader Gary Brockenshire and his wife Barbara would move to the area to take over the management of the hotel. Mr Brockenshire also owns the Exchange Hotel in Kilcoy.

Mr Foley said despite recent suggestions, Woolworths and Cornerstone were never involved in any negotiations on the hotel. Mr Foley said he and his wife Margaret would have a break before entering into another hotel venture with Sir William Allen elsewhere. “I expect that we will be going towards the end of August or early September. The changeover date has not been finalised.”

The remainder of the current staff would hold onto their positions after the changeover. “I have been advised by Gary Brockenshire that all my staff will be maintained,” Mr Foley said.

Mr Foley said he had enjoyed his time at the Maleny Hotel. “We thoroughly enjoyed our times and our new friends. We have always made people welcome at the hotel,” he said. Division 1 Councillor Dick Newman thanked Sir William Allen and his family for their contribution to the community.

“The Allen family, with their managers John and Margaret Foley have provided not only a great commercial facility, but also have provided many community benefits with their generosity… I wish both families well for the future and would hope that they keep in touch with us,” Cr Newman said.

“I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new publicans. I wish you all the best in your new venture.”
