Controversial "human shield"
Donna Mulhearn visits Maleny

by Cameron Outridge

On Tuesday June 29 Iraqi “Human Shield” Donna Mulhearn will be in Maleny to give a talk at the Up Front Club.  Ms Mulhearn, a former New South Wales shire councillor, went to Iraq before the war as a human shield and stayed in Bahgdad during the massive bombing campaign and final invasion.

Donna said she was most moved by seeing a whole generation of children suffering from trauma from the war.  In November she returned to Iraq and started a shelter for street kids who had become homeless because of the war.  Donna said that in April this year she and her friends in Baghdad were horrified by daily reports from Fallujah.  She said they made up their minds to travel to Fallujah and see if they could help despite the danger.  She said she saw first-hand results of the carnage and was twice shot at by US soldiers while escorting an ambulance trying to help the wounded.

On leaving Fallujah, Donna said she was captured and held for 24 hours by the Iraqi militia before being released.  Donna said she was publically denounced by John Howard and Alexander Downer for being irresponsible.  But she maintains that her main offence was to tell the truth about the massacre in Fallujah.  Donna is accompanied in Australia by her Iraqi friend Ra’id who is also keen to share his story.

The doors will be open at 5pm and it is suggested you arrive early for a good seat.  Food and drink will be available.  Entry by donation.  For information call Sammy Ringer on 54943812.
