"New"man struggles to keep
pace with demands for time

by Cameron Outridge

Newly elected Division One Councillor Dick Newman may be struggling to keep his head above water – or at least keep his head above the massive pile of files on his desk – but he has scoffed at suggestions that he is not returning calls.

The Range News questioned Cr Newman about an email to Council customer service staff from him.  In the email Cr Newman says he doesn’t want to talk to anyone and asks staff to redirect them to customer service.

“My mobile is off, my phone unplugged and I don’t want to talk to anyone,” the email says.  He also suggests staff take messages but “let them know I might take up to three or even four weeks to get back to them”.  “If they want me to attend a meeting, tell them regretfully decline.”

But yesterday Cr Newman said the email issue was a beat-up and the message was only in relation to one day’s work when he needed to concentrate on the budget and Woolworths issues. Cr Newman said as a new councillor he was struggling to keep up with the demands on his time and with trying to learn the ropes in a large beauraucracy.  But he was definately not ignoring the ratepayers.
