Thousands flock to
Wood Expo
by Tara  Conroy

Close to 11 thousand timber enthusiasts locked to the popular Maleny Wood Expo last weekend for yet another huge event. The three day Expo hosted a great lineup of exhibitors, from wood, environmental, farm and forestry displays, to a Maleny produce stall.

" With a record number of visitors and exhibitors in nine years of running, the Expo was absolutely fantastic," said Barung Landcare organiser, Mim Coulstock. "People travelled from all over the state and there were even some interstate visitors," she said. "This year was definitely the most successful year yet, and there seemed to be a lot more interest about the timber industry. "

Cultivating the future of Australian native timbers was the theme of this year's expo, which focused on the need to promote a sustainable supply of the region's magnificent timbers by showcasing the talents of some of the best wood artisans. Ms Coulstock said the highlight of the event was the Wootha Prize.

"The competition offered artists working in sustainability harvested Australian native timbers from native forests or plantations, recycled or weed timbers, the opportunity t showcase their works in the prestige competition," she said. "I was so thrilled with the high quality of entries received for the inaugural Wootha prize.

Taking home first prize were two tie breakers -Maleny artist, Don Powell's exquisite Pandora's Box, created from salvaged beech and Western Australian Paul Heeneberry's Jewellery Box made from jarrah root burl.

Other features of the event included performances by local musicians, the launch of the new Maleny Music CD, and a live broadcast by ABC Coast FM.

Visitors check out some camphor laurel slabs on display at the Expo.
