Maleny Glass blower artist, Mark Kalifa has been named as the commissioned artist to design and cast the 2012 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards.
The
awards celebrate the contribution of individuals, community
organisations and businesses in the region. Nominations for the
Awards close on 30 December 2011. The ceremony will be held on
January 25th, 2012 at the Maroochy Baptist Centre, North Buderim.
Mark
has lived in Maleny for over 20 years having emigrated from Paris in
1974 and operates a hot glass studio in Maleny. Mark said that he
draws inspiration from the landscape around his home.
“I
combine the vivid colours of the outback and reef with a classical form
of glass blowing and modern tones to create unique artworks. It is
from sand that glass is made and it is this neat cycle that creates a
poetic balance - the glass blown mountain sculptures are being made from
former mountains themselves.” Mark said.
