Major General Slatter visits the Sunshine Coast Hinterland
Written by Les Fawkes

The head of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, Major General Mick Slater, recently visited and consulted with locales within the Sunshine Coast Hinterland area which  still bears the scars of the past summer's torrential rain and flooding.

Whilst the Sunshine Coast Hinterland did not experience the losses of our fellow Queenslanders in areas such as the Capricornia, South West, Lockyer Valley, Toowoomba and Brisbane the floods still managed to cause a lot of devastation in Sunshine Coast Hinterland communities.

"On my daily trips around the Glass House areacsince the floods earlier this year I am still awed at the destruction meted out on our major infrastructure – destruction that is still to be mended in many instances,” Mr Powell said.

Major General Slatter  toured through Bellthorpe, a community that suffered extensively and still continues to face challenges with their main access routes in and out of rural location.

He also visited the damaged Grigor Bridge in Conondale and viewed the landslides along Maleny-Kenilworth Road along with the Palmwoods-Montville Road, a road further damaged in January after initially being closed due to slides in early 2010.

Locals from Conondale took the opportunity to meet with the Major General and express their ongoing frustration at works associated with Grigor Bridge and Maleny-Kenilworth Road.

"It was about time someone in authority came to Conondale to meet with locals and see first hand what we are dealing with, "  said Mr David Sands from the Conondale Valley Association.

"Major General Slatter heard the message from locals loud and clear and  communities like Bellthorpe and Conondale will not be forgotten." said Mr. Powell.
