Have you noticed the flowers and memorial to a young person who lost his life too early on Stanley River Road,. Maleny in front of the Macadamia Nut Farm. This accident occurred in May 2014 when a vehicle driven by Joshua Paul Feeney, 21 years of age crashed into a power pole killing the passenger, Joseph Haynes, 20.
The
matter has now come to finalisation in the Magistrates Court,
Maroochydore on June 1st when Mr. Feeney pleaded guilty to disqualified
driving and drink driving. He was sentenced to six and a half years
jail, eligible for parole in August 2017. Mr. Feeney’s licence was
disqualified permanently.
Mr. Feeney was disqualified from
holding a drivers licence at the time of this collision and he had
blood-alcohol concentration was 0.21.
He had already been disqualified in the previous February after being convicted of his second drink-driving offence.
Mr.
Feeney’s barrister, Ms. Kylie Hillard, said her client was “extremely
remorseful” and was the father of two young children, aged two and seven
weeks.
District Court Judge Mr. John Robertson indicated that he
wanted the sentence to stand as a warning to drivers when he said the
accident was “what happens when you drink and then someone decides to
get into a motor vehicle and drive. You will lose your liberty and
lose it for a long time.”
