In the early 1990’s, following
discussions between Maleny Hospital staff, Maleny Emergency Services,
Maleny Rotary Club and the Sunshine Coast Rescue Helicopter Service a
helipad was established at the Maleny Hospital to allow fast transport
of critically ill patients to other major hospitals.
This helipad it to be closed and the Maleny Show grounds is to be used instead.
Maleny State Emergency Service Group Leader, Lloyd Larney said, “With the introduction of larger twin engined helicopters it is safer and more convenient to use the show grounds.”
He continued, “The wash from the larger engines was creating problems, not only for the Maleny hospital but for the increased number of residents living in the vicinity of the hospital. Beside this the showgrounds is a much safer location to be landing helicopters.”
Information from Maleny hospital staff and Maleny ambulance personnel believe that the new arrangements would be more convenient for all involved.
There has been an increasing tendency to transport critically injured people direct from the scene of the incident to a major hospital ensuring quicker treatment to the injured party.
