Health Minister has announced a $6.9 million dollar funding scheme for
the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital for the establishment of a
specialist geriatric evaluation and management unit.
This funding will increase the number of funded beds from 16 to 24 until 2014. The unit would treat sub-acute patients who require rehabilitation. These patients presently take up one of the beds allocated to general admission patients.
Nursing Director, Mark Sierakowski said, “These beds will be for patients who have had major surgery and are not recovering as fast as they should recover. These patients are normally transferred to other hospitals so that they could get the extra care needed.
This funding will create a number of new staffing positions at the hospital, including nursing staff, specialists such as a pathologist, social workers, nurses, and a pharmacist. There will also be other visiting specialists.
The new unit will be houses in the birthing suite which has not been used for the intended purpose for a number of years.
This program is to help older people to be able to live in their own homes much longer before going into a nursing home. The first patients are expected to be treated by October, 2011.
