A
Maleny man set what is believed to be a record on the first day of
January 2010. Unfortunately, it is one of which he would most likely not be proud. At about
11.30 a.m. he was involved in an incident when the car he was driving
crashed into a tree in Hakea Avenue, Maleny after travelling on the
wrong side of the road.
The man, Simon Roper, aged 40 then left the scene and was located by police a short time later. He was conveyed to the Maroochydore Police station where he underwent a breath test and recorded a reading of .433 percent.
Whilst this is not the highest ever recorded reading in Queensland it is certainly among the highest. A medical sources is quoted as saying, “that in someone who is not an alcoholic, they could die somewhere between 0.4 and 0.5 from alcoholic poisoning. It would take many drinks, probably straight alcohol rather than beer to get to this level."
Police sources said Mr Roper told them that he had stopped drinking at midnight and was on his way home at the time of this accident. The average dissipation rate of alcohol for an average male is said to be around 0.015% per hour.
No persons were seriously injured in this incident.
The man has been charged with drink-driving and being drunk in a public place and is scheduled to appear in the Caloundra Magistrates Court on January 21.
