Last year, when the Maleny
Singers performed The Mikado in the Community Centre, a special
orchestra was formed to accompany the performance. The show, and
combination of voices and orchestra was such a success, that it has
been decided to continue with this format.
The orchestra, slightly larger than last year, will now be called “THE MALENY PERFORMING ARTS ORCHESTRA”.
These excellent players have been put together by Chas Bromley, himself a superb flautist who began his career in the British Army, and since then has played with many symphony orchestras, including being principal flute with the Tasmanian Symphony for many years.
The idea came to Chas when he saw The Gondoliers, afterwards asking The Singer’s director Margaret Taylor why they were not using an orchestra?
As a result, Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, with its wonderful orchestral score, containing so many well known tunes, including the famous Can Can!
This will be the first production for this new collaboration, to be performed in July at The Community Centre.
Orchestra leader, Elisha Harrison, will travel from Brisbane for the performances, together with several other players who are members of the well-known St Lucia Orchestra (who incidentally gave a special concert with the Maleny Singers in December 2006 to raise funds for the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital).
The rest of the new orchestra play regularly with the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra, with whom the Maleny Singers have an affiliation after performing together on the Last Night of the Proms concerts at Noosaville, and Kawana in 2007.
Here is another opportunity for Maleny to demonstrate their usual unstinting support to this combination of enormous talent, giving so freely of their time and who donate their earnings to local community organizations.
The joy of making music, giving pleasure to others and having fun is not to be missed!
