It was first mooted nearly a decade ago, but January 2010 has seen the commencement of a pipeline from the Landers Shute water treatment plant and the township of Maleny. Whilst the pipeline is only 8.8 kms in length the project is not expected to be completed until June 2010. Much of the construction will cross rugged terrain of the Blackall Range area.
The
pipeline is capable of delivering three mega litres of water to Maleny
each day. This project will allow the decommissioning of the two town
weirs that presently provide Maleny with water.
Division
five Cr Jenny McKay said, “It is the right of every town in South East
Queensland to have a guaranteed water supply and this pipeline will do
that for Maleny.”
This
pipeline when originally planned in 2000 and at that time expected to
cost approximately $3 million dollars was opposed by a group of Maleny
residents called, The Maleny Water Group. Today the pipeline is
expected to cost approximately $5 million.
Cr
McKay continued, “Construction will be undertaken with the least
amount of impact possible to local residents by Brisbane company Pipe
& Civil Constructions. The project includes completing the
construction of the pipeline, the building of a new pump station, pump
installation, testing and commissioning.
Should
residents have any queries involving the construction process or any
problems associated with the constuction they should contact
construction manager, Ross Miller on 07 3262 4600.
