Maleny’s
past revolved around the supply of timber. For decades timber cutters
supplied Maleny District sawn timber for a growing Australia.
Barung
Landcare’s “From chainsaws to fine furniture, the Maleny Wood Expo” is
all about sustainable use of our remaining timber resources, highlighted
through the amazing work of our talented regional woodworkers.
There will be displays of lovingly crafted products by furniture and toy-makers, musical
instrument and box-makers, whittlers, carvers and everything in between -
all from sustainably harvested native, weed and recycled timbers.
One of the popular displays is one provided by the Blackall Range Woodworkers. It is possible to purchase some of their wooden items.
Stan Ceglinski will demonstrate the age-old skills used by white settlers who came to the Blackall Range in the mid 1800’s to harvest the red cedars. This event gives spectators the opportunity to smell the distinctive spicy aroma of newly milled timber whilst watching live demonstrations of chainsaws, woodworking, trade tools and more.
Organisers of the Maleny Wood Expo From Chainsaw to Fine Furniture are
delighted to announce that The Wootha Prize competition is back again in
2011. The winner of the Wootha Prize will receive $1000 cash, a trophy and the
option of a free site at the 2012 Maleny Wood Expo. The runner up will
receive $300 and third place $200.
The Wood Expo will be held at the Maleny Showgrounds on Saturday April 30th and Sunday May 1st, 2011.
This exhibition has grown over many years and now is an important event on Maleny’s social calendar.
It is not only wood and fine furniture though as Great Scott’s (Pictured right) mad antics of balancing and juggling will put smiles on the faces of both children and adults.
Other exhibits include eco-friendly building products, local produce
and gourmet foods, environmental displays, local native plants and great
food, the Expo really has something for everyone!
For safety reasons children must be accompanied by an adult as there are working demonstrations of mobile sawmills and chainsaws.
All venues are accessible for guests with a disability. Facilities
include a drop off point, disabled toilets and easy roads between
venues.
The Expo offers visitors two days of some past timber history and a look at some fine timber “art” created by the area’s finest artisans.
