Oppose internet censorship it is important!
Written by Les Fawkes

Oppose internet censorship   -   it is important for your freedom of speech!

The Federal Government wants to pass laws to force internet service providers to block banned material hosted on overseas servers.

Internet censorship in Australia primarily is the proposed banning of certain Internet materials by the Australian Federal Government, through restriction of site access on all Australian Internet Service Providers thus restricting that information to the end user.

This will bring the Australian Government in line with countries like China, Burma, North Korea  and Iran that filter the information available via the internet.

The alleged purpose of internet filtering is to stop the use of the internet to people who use it to carry out their devious pursuits of child pornography.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy says he intends to introduce the legislation in the first half of 2010.

There is also a huge cost to internet service providers to ensure this filtration.   This means that this cost will be passed onto the individual internet user.

Most informed people in the internet industry believe that the mandatory internet filter will not protect children from harmful content on the internet and will waste taxpayers’ money.

Whilst the stated aim is to help protect children from the dangers of the Internet, this paternalistic scheme should raises some issues that affect all Australians.

As a source of daily information, the Internet increases in importance every day.    Is it really safe for the Government of the day to decide what Australian adults can and can’t see?   Who knows what political information will be secretly blocked in future years?

There is more here to consider in respect to free speech than what may first appear.
