Sunday December 4th saw the annual Passing our Parade of Naval Cadet Unit TS Centaur.

The parade had a turnout of twenty-three cadets following years of 2009 and 2010 when the Unit had almost closed down as the number had dropped to five.

Able Seaman
Emma Batista.

Unit Commander, SBLT Eddie Vann ANC said,  “The Unit now has a very strong parent committee behind it and there will be an increase of three unit staff appointed to start in the next few weeks.    There will be an Executive Officer to handle the Unit administration and a Training Officer.”

The Unit has also been fortunate to have received a number of funding grants.   The main one from the Gambling Community Benefit for the amount of $22585 which will be used to include a new kitchen in the Unit building which is situated in the Maleny Showgrounds.

The Sunshine Coast Regional Council have provided $2000 towards insurance costs for the coming year and $600 towards some sporting equipment.

Petty Officer
David Clancy

The Passing out Parade is a time when the annual cadet awards are presented.

The top award for 2011 for Cadet of the Year which is donated by the Maleny RSL and it went to Able Seaman Emma Batista.

The Cadet Unit helps to foster many new skills to young cadets.   It teaches them to be more resilient,  take on responsibility and other skills that will help them well into their future.

The Recruit of the Year award went to Seaman Melissa Robinson.

The Leadership Award went to Petty Officer David Clancy.

A number of Cadets also were awarded for 100% attendance.   Many more cadets had missed just one or two training sessions.

Every cadet turned out on parade in an immaculate condition.

This shows the dedication these young people have towards their organisation.

A bronze plaque was presented to the Unit showing the exact position that the Hospital Ship Centaur was sunk in May 1942, during WW11 with the loss of 268 crew and passengers.    This plaque will be cemented into the floor of the Unit Training Room.    Maleny Cadet Unit TS Centaur is named after that Hospital Ship.

Commanding Officer of TS Centaur,  SBLT Eddie Vann ANC said that the Unit is still looking for more crew to join.   For more information contact him be email Edward.Vann@cadetnet.gov.au
