A tribute to the service men and women of World War I was officially opened on 18 April 2015 at Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. This beautiful walk is well worth a quiet visit.
An
initiative of the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, the Walk of Remembrance
commemorates the service and sacrifices of the men and women who served
in WWI, marking the centenary of the events celebrated each year in
Australia at ANZAC Day.
Director of Nursing Nicole White said
$59,000 was provided by the Australian Government through the Anzac
Centenary Local Grants Program for the project.“
With the
support and cooperation of the hospital administration and the Sunshine
Coast Hospital and Health Service, the Walk of Remembrance features
memorials, sculptures, and plaques honouring the individual servicemen
who enlisted from the district, stones engraved with the names of those
killed in action, gardens, a timber arbour protecting a reflective
garden, and appropriate entrance to a pathway constructed by the health
service’s engineer,” Ms White said.
“We are extremely grateful to
the Auxiliary which supports the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The
tireless activities of our Auxiliary are pivotal to the consistent
service we are able to provide our local community.”
Auxiliary past president Margaret Moss said the hospital itself was a memorial of the men and women who served in WWI.
“The
hospital was planned and funded by the Maleny community in 1917 and is
one of only two memorial hospitals in Queensland,” she said “The Walk
of Remembrance is a fitting way for the hospital to have marked the
100th anniversary celebrations for ANZAC Day 2015.
“We’re also
pleased to say that we’ve received significant support from the Maleny
community including local artists Tohm Hajncl (of Amber Leaf
Landscaping) and stonemason Wayne Markwort who have been instrumental in
this development”.
It will be a place for reflection all through the year.
