Sunshine Coast Police advise businesses to be on the lookout for fake $50 notes. Small businesses in Maroochydore are the latest victims of a suspected counterfeit gang.
There have been a number of complaints that counterfeit notes have been passed onto businesses on the Sunshine Coast within a 24-hour period.
Police advise that the fake $50 note has a white paper window instead of a clear window.
The faces appearing on the note, first Aboriginal writer David Unaipon and first female member of parliament Edith Cowan, were upside down.
The fake $50 was also somewhat smaller than the real currency.
The notes recovered at this time are not particularly good replicas and are printed on paper rather than plasticised sheeting.
Small businesses, especially who have a busy time with a large number of transactions at the one time appear to be the target of the offenders in this instance. They are targetted because staff are busy and tend not to look too closely to the notes.
Offenders tend not to operate in the same area for long periods of time and are likely to move onto another area quickly.
Anyone who believes they are in possession of counterfeit money or may hold relevant information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
