Woodford Folk Festival International Acts
Written by Les Fawkes
Thursday, 24 December 2009
Several overseas acts are set to perform at this year’s Woodford Folk Festival from the 27th December until the 1st January, transcending cultural barriers with the language of music and art.    Here are a few that you may want to highlight on your festival programme.  Kaki King made a name for herself with her expertise in unusual guitar skills; hammering, tapping and fanning, to name a few.    Having gained many accolades such as the only female artist in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 100 great guitarists, they referred to her as a guitar god; she is undoubtedly a musician that deserves attention.    Rock legend Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters is one of her many fans and she played on one of their album tracks in the studio and live on stage during a recent tour.

Kaki’s musical style is difficult to pinpoint, when you think you have an idea of what she is about, her style will change and she challenges the audience to rethink and re-listen, but that’s part of her appeal both in the studio and live.

Seriously jazzy funky Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro will perform six times at the festival this year.    Hailing from Japan they bring their own brand of good vibes and each of the six musicians display a great mastership of their instruments.     Their mission is quite simple, to raise the roof at each venue and keep feet dancing at any time of the day or night.

Toni Childs joins the festival all the way from Hawaii to bless our ears with her powerful voice.    Since her debut album in 1988 and an auspicious start to her career as support act for Bob Dylan she has forged a career that is still going strong.    Her lyrics are inspiring and passionate with themes that hold true in many of our lives.

Woodford Folk Festival welcomes these artists who come to enrich our lives and share their musical experiences with the festivalgoer’s.

Originally an Australian act and now based in London are the legendary Flame Oz, don’t miss the absolutely spectacular fireshows at The Village Green on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 9pm.

The Visual Arts programme has expanded significantly this year and festival organisers are thrilled to be presenting a host of international performance and visual artists.    Including London based performance artist Miriam King who will bend your mind with her Butoh inspired performance art; also look out for a woman wearing tweed holding a sign on the festival streets.    Indonesian artists Heri Dono and Dadang Christanto and Japanese artists Harada Akatsuki have created installations around the festival site.

LENTIC, a new Folktronica project by Canada’s Ember Swift is an eclectic fusion of Chinese traditional instrumentation with Folk and World music, electronic beat and deep grooves, topped with lyrics in both Mandarin and English.

The Folklorica venue presents the cultural heritage of more than twenty countries through music, dance, theatre and ritual.

Tickets are 10% cheaper on the Woodford Folk Festival website than at the gate go to www.woodfordfolkfestival.com. Programmes are available by calling the Queensland Folk Federation or through selected newsagents, check online for these outlets.
