Art Auction for Michael Berry
Written by Administrator
Friday, 02 December 2005
There has been an overwhelming response to the news of Michael Berry's ordeal at having to have both legs amputated below the knees.    Following on from Nan Paterson's kind donation of an artwork to raise funds for the necessary and costly adaptations of the house, the artistic community of the Blackall Range has once again shown its support for a worthy cause.

So much so, that the Afternoon Tea Art Auction to be held at the Maleny Community Centre in Maple Street on Sunday December 18 has a full complement of artwork already.   Such notable artists as David Paulson, Peter Hudson, Kevin Oxley and James Fearnley have all donated paintings and there will also be hand blown glass from Marc Kalifa and ceramics by Shannon Garson, among many others.

Information about the auction is being spread far and wide via Michael's many friends from previous places of work and it is hoped that as many people as possible will come along on Sunday December 18 to see the amazing array of quality artwork which has been donated.   Meanwhile, Michael was in good spirits on Monday and planning his next Drum article.   He was focussed on his recovery and getting up and about on new prosthetic legs.

"The way they amputated my legs is to give me maximum advantage in learning to walk again," Michael said.    "I'm probably going to have to come home for Christmas before they can do anything in the way of prosthetics.    Early next year I hope you'll see me walking around almost normal.    It's a very weird illness - it's not a cancer illness but they find chemotherapy will knock it.

"But you can't stay on chemo for too long because the side effects are not good."    Michael said he had been overwhelmed by the community's response to his ailment especially in helping to reconfigure his house.    "It's way over what I imagined would happen,'' he said.    "It just shows you the way Maleny does get together and they rally around to help people in need - even Michael Berry! It's a great place to be.    It's been really quite overwhelming."

The BSB number printed last week for the Michael Berry fund was supplied incorrectly. The BSB is 704 606 (Maleny Credit Union).    The account number, J1418S1, was correct. For those who have tried to donate funds and found them "bouncing back" - please try again.    Areminder to those who wish to offer services/labour etc phone Sammy Ringer on 5494 3812 or e-mail  berryfund@optusnet.com.au
