While most people find mowing the lawn a chore, local artist Peter
Hollard sees it as creating artworks for his family and the public to
enjoy. Peter has been creating art works as part of his Sunday
mowing ritual for a number of years.

Dick and Peter stand on one of his creations. | People who drive along the Kenilworth Road may see mazes, stars, hearts or other images that Peter creates just by seeing his backyard as a canvass and using his mower as a brush. Peter, who is also a local teacher, has been doing this for a number of years. "I had to mow the block anyway and I thought why not have a bit of fun," said Peter. "People noticed them and it just grew out of that ... it encouraged me to keep going and now my paddock is another canvass for me."
Division 1 Councillor Dick Newman, says that people like Peter Hollard will be involved in the ultimate design for Maple Street, both in delivery of traffic infrastructure as well as the streetscape design. "Art is a very important component of the Maleny township, and we have a good balance of professional artists and amateur artists," he said. "As well as that, our town has demonstrated time and again that we value art in all its forms." Cr Newman was keen to point out that Council will engage a local artist to work with our arts community to produce a visually appealing result in Maple Street.

"If Peter Hollard can create art in his lawn, what could our artists do with something even as mundane as a roundabout?" he said. "The time is ripe for our artists to show the world what Maleny can be."
Caloundra Council are currently advertising for a local artist to work with their design team in Council and an advertisement is in this week's paper.
