Maleny High School is working towards a "Whole of School" approach to
the new Healthy Food and Drink strategy for Queensland Schools. It
will become policy in mid 2006. Canteens are an important part of
the school environment and the High School canteen is modeling healthy
food and drink choices that are tasty, interesting and affordable.
The canteen is operating in a way that will put into practice the
nutrition messages which are taught in the classroom.

| Where?s the chips? Student areconfronted with a new healthier choice menu. | Schools across Queensland are expected to comply with the strategy, which includes all situations where food is supplied in the school environment canteens, vending machines, school excursions, camps, fundraising, classroom rewards, sports days and other curriculum activities.
Maleny High's canteen has introduced "Green Days" each Thursday, in which only the green category foods are offered. The menu includes: home made fresh chicken meat burgers on wholemeal rolls, mini-quiches in bread cases, dips with celery, carrot and capsicum sticks, lavarsh wraps with assorted fills, fish burgers, nachos, toasted sandwiches on multigrain bread, fruit salads and salad trays, juices and water. No milk drinks are sold on green days.
The first two weeks have been a virtual sellout, with students noticing the difference. The canteen staff have noticed that the task of preparing these items is very labour intensive, and have asked for volunteers to put in a couple of hours on Thursdays to help get everything ready. Please contact the canteen on 54998131.
Next year, the soft drink and Mars Bar machines near the canteen will be removed.
