The Maleny Hotel is spearheading a new initiative to fund the purchase
of a special bed for long-term patients at the Maleny Hospital.
Every Tuesday night drinkers at the hotel's bar will be given the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for weekly prizes, like meat trays, with the proceeds to go towards buying a Bi Wave Carer Bed. "We wanted to supply something for the hospital that the state couldn't give it," Maleny Hotel owner/manager Gary Brockenshire said. "We asked the hospital what they most needed and they requested this special bed."
And thanks to the generosity of Maleny's drinking public, the hotel has already accumulated $3000 for the pot since October. But it still needs to raise a further $3000 to be able to purchase the bed, something Gary hopes will happen by the latter part of this year. Hopefully contributions will flood in for this worthy cause. Already some patrons have been contributing $100 at a time!
The bed will be a valuable asset to the hospital, as it is specifically designed for patients whose treatment requires prolonged periods being bed ridden. It features a fully electric dynamic mattress system which avoids bed sores and can be used in the treatment of pressure ulcers. "I think this bed will make the hospital just that bit better for the community," Gary said. "It's going to be a good feeling to give something back."
So, when you're sinking the amber nectar from that schooner, have a thought for those stuck in hospital and put in for some raffle tickets ... you might just get a free feed and help make someone's hospital stay more comfortable.
