Maleny High 40 Hour Famine fund-raiser a record-breaking close shave

About 120 year eight-12 students have just raised a staggering $6500 for World Vision Australia's 40-hour Famine, a charitable initiative which distributes aid to the disadvantaged families in the third world.

Shandell helps Nev
become a smooth operator.
The students all agreed to be sponsored to fast from food or technology for 40 hours to help raise the cash for kids in areas of Africa, where families can often only afford to feed their children just once a day.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again; small in numbers, huge in heart," commented the school's Chaplin, Chris Davis.    "The kids and this community just amaze me  I really appreciate what the children did for this charity."

To help the fundraising initiative, Maleny High teachers Geoff Anthony and Nev Moore offered further motivation, agreeing to have their heads completely shaved if the students broke the $5000 mark.   So after the kids smashed their own record and amassed over $6500, it was more than a close shave for Geoff and Nev when Paul and Shandell from Barbers of Maleny donated their time and expertise, happily "scalping" them in front of an eager school assembly last Tuesday morning!

The funds represent the largest amount ever raised by the school for the organization and this year the money is going to support World Vision's work in Mozambique and

Tanzania to help families grow more food.    "This is the highest figure raised by any public school on the coast," said Greg Bradley, Youth Representative for World Vision on the Sunshine Coast.

"They've done a great job and we're hugely indebted to them."    And the cash really will make a difference  every $40 raised in the Famine will help feed 6 hungry kids for a month.

Funds will also help poor families prepare for natural disasters like floods, earthquakes and tsunamis.

Right: Paul completes Geoff's transformation.
