Maleny is home to many talented individuals and innovative businesses,
but did you know it also plays host to the nation?s largest publisher
of musical theatre? Nestled among the farms and houses in the suburb
of Witta, Maverick Musicals is promoting the work of Australians to a
global audience. And they are good at it, recently being included in
a new book ?Surprisingly Smart? which showcases smart business
operators across the Sunshine Coast.
For over a quarter of a century the firm, founded by the brother and sister team of Simon and Gail Denver, has been sipping and serving the creative juices of Australian playwrights in dramatic circles.
?Most companies sell imports like Grease and Joseph,? said Gail. ?But we want to promote Australia?s talents and at that we are the biggest.? It was her keen eye for business that saw the chance formation of the broking company, after Simon wrote the seminal musical ?Man of Steel? and Gail observed a lot of interest in its script.
?I would never have become a publisher if Simon hadn?t written that play,? she said. ?After its performance I saw a whole crowd build up around him asking for copies of the script and I thought hang on a minute, we can make a business out of this.
?Over 50 percent of schools do a musical per year?. It?s Aussie culture,? said Gail. ?About 80 percent of them buy from us.
The company has more than 60 musicals and plays in print, with their titles selling and being performed throughout Australia, UK, Asia, the USA, Canada and New Zealand. There are more than 40 writers and composers earning royalties from their works with Maverick and the good news is that seven of them are locals.
