Mystery green car sits in protest at Woollies site
Written by Administrator

A car has been dumped on Woolworths? proposed Maleny site next to the Obi Obi Creek in protest of the supermarket giant?s plans to open up shop there.    The bright green Holden is planted between the gates of the site, adorned with anti- Woolworths slogans.    And the car isn?t going anywhere fast because it?s full of concrete!
But the origin of the protest vehicle remains shrouded in mystery as nobody has claimed responsibility for it ... local activists from the Obi Creek Protection Group, an organisation determined to prevent Woolworths from building by the creek, said in a statement:

?The dumping of a car on the proposed Woolworths site was not done by the Obi Creek Protection Group or any of its regular members.   A diverse range of Maleny residents opposed to the supermarket proposal are not directly involved in the group.    Such an action is not on the group?s agenda and we assume it was done by someone who is frustrated at the prospect of work starting on the site soon.?

The group said it is planning a mass, peaceful protest should work begin and that 30 people aged between 20 and 70 had attended a six-hour workshop on non-violent protest at the Old Witta School on Saturday.

?We do not know when or whether work is likely to start and our latest information is that Cornerstone Properties is having difficulty getting a builder because of the likelihood of prolonged protest,? the Obi Protection Group statement continued.    ?We still hope for a resolution to the problem that is satisfactory to the majority of Maleny residents who do not want a supermarket on that site, and to Cornerstone and Woolworths.?

Meanwhile, how long the car will remain on site is also a mystery as the local police have no plans to remove the vehicle.   ?It?s on private land,? said a spokesperson for the local Maleny constabulary.    ?We don?t plan to do anything about it at present.?
