Maleny State High School had three teams travel to Beerwah for the
annual nine-aside rugby league competition. The Under 14 Boys, the
Under 16 Boys and for the very first time the Open Girls all performed
extremely well and met some very stiff opposition.
The girls were the highlight of the day winning their final in the large schools competition, which included Bribie Island, Burnside, Maroochydore and Beerwah. Maleny defeated Beerwah four to two in the grand final.
Maleny second rower Kirsty Heading was in devastating touch, making many incisive runs into opposition territory. Kirsty was Maleny?s leading try scorer and was named Open Girls Player of the Tournament.
The Under 14 Boys made it to the finals but were pipped at the post by a very well drilled Woodford side. Nick Goossens played his heart out and topped the hit up list for the forwards and Sam Martin and Jackson Wray scored three tries each to top the try scoring stakes.
The Under 16 Boys won their final in a tough encounter with old foe Coolum High School. The game was locked up at two tries a piece nearing the end and it looked like going to golden point when Lachlan Grundon saved the day, delivering the match winning try. Maleny won the match three to two and Caine Svenson was named Under 16 Boys Player of the Tournament.
Congratulations to all players and many thanks to their coaches and staff - Emma Becker and Chris (Chappy) Davis for the Open Girls, Brad Williams the Under 14 Boys, Dan Jones the Under 16 Boys and Geoff Anthony Sports Medicine.
