Rotary on top of the world over new lookout

Hard working Maleny Rotarians joined Cr Dick Newman on Saturday for the opening of the revamped Howell's Knob lookout area.    Rotary president Lyn Frencham joined Cr Newman in paying tribute to the Rotary team and community members who contributed their valuable time, money and resources to bring the lookout up to the standard of the views it affords.   "I am just so proud of the effort our club has put into this project,'' said Lyn.

Lyn Frencham & Cr Newman praised member's efforts in revamping the lookout.
Cr Newman said the 18 month project was a great example of what could be achieved by community taking the lead and working with Council.    "Council bought me a budget that was longer than my leg,'' he said.    "But then Rotary did its great big bit and Caloundra City Council did its little bit and you have made the project possible."

Cr Newman said Council officers sometimes had reservations about working with community groups on projects of this scale.    But he had assured them they would have no trouble with Maleny Rotary, and he was proven right.    "It's a great job and you should be proud and it's an asset that will be treasured for a long time," he said.

It was a Rotary Centenary Project and Saturday marked the handing over of the new look lookout to Council.   "This is our local project which celebrates 100 years of Rotary Service,'' said Chris Brooker.

"It was terrible before we began our working bees 18 months ago,'' said Nick Matthews.    "There was overgrown vegetation everywhere, and the old shed was really run down and ugly."

The now-impressive lookout is the highest point in Maleny and offers stunning 360 degree views of the area.    It is a must see for locals and tourists.   To get there take Reesville Road and look for the signs.   The left turn up the hill is after Ruddle Drive.    You will see Lookout indicated in the Apex Directory Tourist Map.    On a fine day you can see the outline of Brisbane.

Rotary thanked the following people and businesses for their help with the project: Bob Frampton, Mr Heading, Phil Vickers, Allan Newcombe, Bob Anderson, Rob Parker, Grant Manning & Rightmix Concrete.
