Tina Cooper designs glass-blown didgeridoo

Guests were privileged to hear some unique sounds at Tina Cooper's Tribal Tribute exhibition opening on Saturday September 3 at Illume Creations and The Edge at Mayfield of Montville.

There were sounds born of the elements of earth, fire, air and water, and they emanated from what seemed to be an unlikely shaped vehicle for producing the incredible sound - a glass-blown didgeridoo.   It looked too short, wide and beautifully crafted and decorated to be capable of producing the incredible sounds we're used to hearing from the traditional, hollowedout, wooden didgeridoo.

Tina Cooper handing the didge to Adrian Ross.

But in the hands of master didge player Adrian Ross, with the aid of a specially designed mouthpiece, this instrument sang with the rhythm of his circular breathing and took the didgeridoo to new heights.

This precious Sunrise didgeridoo is the brainchild of glass artist Tina Cooper and was created in collaboration with her hot-glass team members Mat Quirke, Jonathon Westacott and Greg Royer.   They're making another glass didgeridoo to present to Adrian Ross at a concert coinciding with the launch of his new CD.    It is hoped that Adrian will play the new instrument at a closing ceremony at Illume Creations in Montville before the end of the month.

Tina Cooper's Tribal Tribute second edition exhibition features Tina's magnificent glass art pieces, many of them enhanced with contributions from wood artist Roger Chadwick, wrought iron craftsman Graeme Higgins, beadmakers Kimmy G and Garry Lisle and Aboriginal painter Mungaran (Peter Mulcahy) who decorated the native fauna forms on Tina's pieces, including the didge and has his own exquisite paintings on show.   The crowning glory is the huge, 100-year-old red cedar root that now has a heart of fiery glass and wrought iron sculptures.

Her hopes are quickly being realised, as 90 percent of the collection has already been sold and many galleries have expressed interest in her work.   The exhibition is on at Illume Creations, Shop 4, Mayfield of Montville, until September 30, although some of the pieces will remain on permanent display afterwards.
