SHOW Secretary Lyn Burgess is an example of someone whose family has had a lifetime involvement with the Caloundra City Show. Her mum Hilda Penney still looks after the Floral Art Section. Her dad Ron, who passed away in January, was the ring announcer for 15 years. ?I?ve only come back in the past 12 months and taken on the role of secretary. I was involved for 15 years with the Sunshine Coast Show Society,?? said Lyn.
Lyn paid tribute to the host of other families involved in the show. ?For instance Jock Johnson has been involved with exhibiting dairy cattle for god knows how many years. I can remember Mr Johnson exhibiting cattle when I was a kid. Now it?s not only Jock but his nephews are involved - the Ledger boys.? Interestingly, the spirit of the Maleny Show is probably most tangible at the Sunday lunch when the painstaking clean-up is almost complete.
Show Society Publicity Officer Helen McMahon said it was wonderful to see all the workers winding down and lining up for a lovingly prepared hot lunch on the veranda of the pavilion.
?There?s a table nearly as long as the veranda and we all sit down and have a hot lunch and it?s a really great feeling,?? said Helen. ?You can sense the camaraderie that comes from working together for a common purpose.
?Everyone really encourages kids to go down and help out. It?s great seeing the generations involved. You have the feeling that it will continue for a long time so that?s a nice feeling. It?s almost a generational thing. I smile when I look at the kids at the table. I look at them and I think: ?Guess where you?re going to be in 10 years time?.?
Helen said it was obvious the volunteers took pride in their work. ?The day after the show you wouldn?t know there?d been a show,?? she said. ?That?s how good the clean-up is.?
