Councillor says he's now right behind the Precinct Process

DIVISION One Councillor Dick Newman has thrown his support behind the Maleny Community Precinct process.  Cr Newman, seen by many as a stick in the mud regarding the Precinct concept, last week said he was fully behind Mayor Don Aldous.

He said he was looking forward to moving the
consultation process ahead now that a transparent procedure was in place.

"We've come a long way in a couple of years
haven't we"  Cr Newman said wryly.   "The mayor and I are singing the same song."

It is a major revelation from a councillor who
has been accused by many of white-anting and holding up the process for more than a year.    But Cr Newman said the drawn out and expensive Probity Audit was necessary to ensure appropriate procedures were in place.    He said he was happy, now that council had agreed with KPMG auditors? recommendations, that the process would be above board.

"My vision for the Maleny Community
Precinct is that in a couple of years time, or however long it takes, we've been through a process where the community has been satisfied that the land's been examined appropriately and that we have collectively made a decision on how they would like to use that land,"  he said.  "I don't have a particular vision for facilities."

I'm not going to say that it should be a golf
course, that it should be housing, that it should be a swimming pool, or that it should be anything else.    I'm going to go with the community view, whatever that may be."

Cr Newman said council's first priority was to
work through the state's Local Growth Management Strategy.
