THE Farm Hand, an invention by former Beerwah poultry farmer Colin Smith, was the winning invention on ABC’s The New Inventors program.
The Farm Hand is a fully automated system that collects and stores eggs in a refrigerated unit, effectively replacing human egg collectors, and saving thousands of dollars in labour cost.
The poultry industry is currently experiencing a shortfall of labourers.
It seems that there are few people willing to work on poultry farms, so there is a need for mechanisation within the industry.
“It’s been great,” said Colin of his appearance on the show. “It came across pretty well.
We’ve had a few calls from around the country from people wanting to know if it can help them and a call from New Zealand as well.”
While there is yet to be orders placed for the Farm Hand, the interest generated from being on The New Inventors has certainly helped with much-needed exposure of this advantageous invention.
